Introducing midwife Martine Boerma

On September 1, 1998, I began working as a midwife in The Hague. At that time I was very pregnant myself. Now 25 years later I have witnessed many births, including those of my own 3 children. As a clinical midwife, in 2017 I was given the opportunity from the Haga hospital to do the pilot training Integral Pelvic Therapy (IPT). to follow. Especially in the hospital where the situation no longer feels as safe and familiar as home, it is so important for people to meet each other as autonomous and spiritual beings. Especially in a birth which can also be so earthy, raw and intense.

With Daphne van der Putten I then taught IPT sessions for a while, with very delay, time and gentleness in touch. This in addition to my job in the hospital as a clinical midwife, where there are many stimuli, acute care is needed and there seems to be no time for anything. The training IPT has helped me to feel and nurture myself. A prerequisite for being able to see the other. Apart from the medical care demand.

Way of life

Now I am not working, but I am a midwife with Dana. It has become a way of life. Because we are really looking to make a personal connection with the clients. To get to know them to know what they need in the transition to parenthood. Everyone is unique with their own baggage and possible scars from life. So every preparation is also unique.

What appeals to you about working at Dana?

Working at Dana actually has everything: being a midwife but also the therapeutic in the form of IPT. There is also a lot of room for creativity. It challenges you to think: What does this couple need right now? This invites you to be creative, which also keeps you continuously nourishing and developing yourself. With my clinical obstetrician background, I am also at home in the medical setting. For example, in a breech presentation or other medical reason, I also have a big role. Sometimes as a doula, but you stay on board until the end.

I walk with clients for a while during this special time of pregnancy and birth. Sometimes I walk a little ahead and plot the way. From beginning to end I stay with them, which is so special!

Integral Pelvic Therapy (IPT) & pregnancy

Pregnancy occurs through sexuality in the pelvis. The baby grows in the pelvis. During delivery, the baby comes out through your pelvis. And we don’t talk about the pelvis? During my midwifery training, we didn’t talk about that. Of course, in retrospect, with the knowledge I have now, that’s pretty crazy.

The pelvis is the area of your safety, your foundation. Can you be consciously with your pelvis. What is taking place there? Look, is it safe there? Can you inhabit your pelvis? Before you allow someone else in that area there. That’s what we work with in the IPT sessions. In pregnancy, but sometimes also after childbirth. IPT does not guarantee a “good” birth. But it does make you so much more aware of what is going on in this area. What I like about IPT is that sometimes you don’t even have to touch. Every IPT session is different anyway. We always look at what is needed in the moment.
